If you have lived in California for a considerable amount of time, you are probably aware of how prone our foliage is to wildfires! If your home is ever in danger of being damaged by a wildfire, you need to know how to prepare. Here are some tips for if you are ever faced with that unfortunate situation!

1. Keep an eye on the fiery situation, and do not wait for an evacuation notice if you are worried.
2. Your attic and ground vents should be sealed with either a commercial seal, or pre-cut plywood.
3. Pull out any ladders you may have in your garage, and place them by your roof so that firefighters will have easy access to it if necessary.
4. Do not turn off the outside lights when you leave. Leaving them on will help firefighters to see better if they need to work around your home at night.
5. Keep your interior lights on as well to increase visibility inside of your home fills with smoke.
6. Never leave home without an emergency kit!
7. Make sure to account for all members of your family, including your pets!
8. Grab all of the garden hoses in your possession, and hook them up to water faucets around your house. Firefighters may need the extra water.
9. Keep all of your doors and windows closed, but unlocked.
10. Turn off your sprinklers so that the water pressure is not decreased when firefighters need to use your water supply.
11. All of your most flammable furniture should be arranged in the middle of the room.
12. Turn off your air conditioning.
13. If you have any propane tanks on your property, move them away.
14. Run over to your neighbors’ home, and make sure they are aware of the severity of the situation. They should be preparing to leave as well.
