What Are Your Family’s Thanksgiving Traditions?

As Thanksgiving rolls around, check out these common holiday traditions.

While most people assume that the turkey is the main event on Thanksgiving, there are many other family traditions that help to make the holiday a memorable one each year. Check out these common Thanksgiving holiday traditions to see how many your family takes advantage of!

  • Turkey and trimmings – from deep-fried turkeys to turkey burgers, no matter which way you prepare your bird, you are sticking to a tradition that dates back for centuries. The National Turkey Federation reports that 95 percent of Americans enjoy some type of turkey meal on Thanksgiving.
  • Football – the first intercollegiate football championship on Thanksgiving took place in 1876, and has stuck around ever since. Along with watching the game on TV, many families also head outside and play a friendly game of their own.
  • Thanksgiving parade – with most American households having more than one TV in the house, it makes it easy to split the viewing time between the football game and the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade. The tradition started in 1924 and has grown larger every year.
  • Wish making – wishbones have been a symbol of good luck since before the time of the Romans. The tradition of pulling apart the turkey’s wishbone is a great way to add a little extra fun and competition to your dinner table while also giving everyone something to wish for.
  • Giving thanks – although last on the list, it is definitely not the least important Thanksgiving tradition. The holiday is all about giving thanks for all of the good in the past year. Families show their thanks in many different ways, including handing out meals to the homeless and saying a prayer before they sit down to eat.
