Are You Ready for the Summer Solstice?

2015 Summer Solstice

Even though the unofficial start of summer was a couple weeks ago on Memorial Day weekend, the summer season does not officially start until June 21st, or the summer solstice 2015. On that day, the sun reaches its highest point in the sky, leading to the longest day of the year.

Depending on where you are during the summer solstice, some areas will get to enjoy as many as 16 hours’ worth of daylight. The solstice happens twice a year because of the way that the Earth rotates on its axis. The summer solstice happens each year in December in the Southern Hemisphere, and in June in the Northern Hemisphere. The summer solstice is considered the longest day of the year because the sun rises north of east and sets north of west, leading to more daylight.

While you are celebrating the summer solstice this year, keep these summer safety tips in mind to have a safe and enjoyable season.

  • Stay hydrated – the hot temperatures cause you to sweat more, meaning that you need to drink more fluids throughout the day to stay hydrated. If you are doing any physical activity, make sure to increase your water intake even more.
  • Use sunscreen – every time you go outside, you should put on sunscreen that has at least 15 SPF, and reapply every two hours. If you will be in the sun for a prolonged amount of time, wear a wide brimmed hat and sunglasses or find shade to sit in to protect your skin.
  • Keep an eye on kids – whenever you are around water, no matter if it is your backyard pool or a lake, make sure to keep a close eye on all children to ensure that they stay safe.
