September is National Emergency Preparedness Month! During this month of recognition, over 3,000 organizations stress the importance of being prepared for a disaster. Many of the disasters that interrupt our most pleasant dreams are ones that do not give warning. As a California resident, it is imperative that we are prepared for earthquakes. Earthquakes provide no warning and can literally turn a family’s life upside down. Gathered are some important items to add to your emergency checklist:

• In order to ensure safety, every member of your family must understand the emergency preparedness plan. The plan will fall through if even one member does not fully understand the plan. Once you create a plan and stock your disaster preparedness kit, it is important that you sit down with your family and explain everything thoroughly. It is important that you follow through with your plan and conduct regular family disaster preparedness drills in which everything listed in the plan is practiced.
• In formulating your family’s disaster preparedness plan, you must look into your particular community’s method of warning the neighborhood. You may want to obtain additional protection and subscribe to a local emergency alert system.
• Does everyone in your household know how to use a fire extinguisher? Chances are only one or two members know how to properly extinguish a flame. It is important that you teach everyone, even the young ones, how to use the fire extinguisher.
• Additionally, each member of your household should know how to turn off all utilities in the event of a disaster. Give everyone a tutorial and have them practice.
• Most importantly, make sure that everyone is on the same page. The best way to prepare, react, and recover from a disaster is to be prepared. When everyone in your family is prepared, there will be no reason to panic.
