12 Tips to Keep Your Holiday Safe and Fun!

Be festive and safe this holiday season!

Breakout the holiday lights, hang your stockings, and trim the Christmas tree! While holiday décor is fun and festive, it can also be dangerous. They can cause injury as well as considerable damage to your home. As you prepare to decorate for the holiday season, keep these holiday safety tips in mind to avoid any decorating mishaps.

  1. Keep your Christmas tree fresh and hydrated! A dry tree is a fire hazard. Make sure to periodically fill the tree stand with water and check the needles for breakage. A healthy tree should have minimal needle breakage.
  2. Make sure your artificial Christmas tree is fire-resistant.
  3. Don’t use lights on a metallic tree. They pose a fire hazard.
  4. Clear stoves, radiators, vents, fireplaces, and other heated places in your home of any decorations to prevent any fires.
  5. Position your tree away from any walkways or doorways to avoid any accidental tumbles.
  6. Make holiday décor child and pet proof. Keep decorations out of reach, avoid sharp or heavy objects, and rid your holiday display of any small parts that could be swallowed.
  7. Use artificial snow in a well-ventilated setting.
  8. Test your lights! Make sure your lights have been safety approved, and check for any broken parts, like cracked sockets or frayed wires.
  9. Use your Christmas lights appropriately. Make sure your outdoor lights are suitable for outside use and only use indoor lights inside.
  10. Do not leave lights unattended.
  11. Make sure electrical wires for lights, extension cords, and any other electric decoration are in good shape. Dispose of any frayed or exposed wire.
  12. Keep candles in a safe space, away from any flammable materials or where they might be knocked over. Do not leave lit candles unattended.
