Common Driving Distractions You Need to Stop, NOW!
When it comes to driving, distractions are everywhere. Thanks in part to the rise of personal technology, drivers now have to make a concerted effort to avoid these distractions while keeping their attentions on the road ahead.
The California Department of Motor Vehicles has identified a number of common driving distractions as well as safe driving tips to better manage your focus and stay safe on the road. Here are some of the top driving distractions to be mindful of out on the roadway.
Texting
Texting is considered by many researchers to be the most dangerous form of distraction, occupying a driver’s thoughts, eyes and hands. Drivers are advised to never text while operating a vehicle.
Cell phone use
Hands-free headsets can reduce the severity of the distraction, but cell phones still distract drivers — whether handheld or not — and talking on the phone while driving can increase the risk of an accident.
Applying makeup
It may be tempting to do your makeup during your morning commute, but the DMV says it’s a dangerous tactic that makes you more likely to cause or become involved in an accident.
Fatigue
Yes, even fatigue is its own form of distraction, taking your mental cognition away from the task at hand. Drivers are advised to stop driving if their fatigue is affecting their focus or reaction speed.
