Columbus Day: October 12!

Celebrate this Columbus Day in Hemet, CA, by learning about the origin!

Columbus Day is a U.S. holiday that commemorates the landing of Christopher Columbus in the New World on October 12, 1492. This day did not become a federal holiday until 1937, but was widely recognized during the 18th century. Many of Americans honor Columbus’ achievements and celebrate Italian-American heritage.

Christopher Columbus was an Italian-born explorer who had set sail in August 1492, backed by the Spanish Monarchs King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella. He landed in the Bahamas, even though he intended to visit China and India, and became the first European to explore the Americas since the Vikings set up colonies in the 10th century. After discovering America, he returned to Spain in March 1493 in triumph, bearing gold, spices, and “Indian” captives. Before his death in 1506, he crossed the Atlantic several more times.

In many parts of the United States, Columbus Day has evolved into a celebration of parades and street fairs featuring colorful costumes, music, and Italian food. Many choose to learn about the Native American culture.
