Sochi’s Winter Olympics Were an Overall Success

The 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi concluded on February 23, and after a few missteps in the opening ceremony and lots of pre-Olympic questions, blunders and money — this year’s Olympics was an overall success.

Twelve new Olympic events debuted at the Winter Games in Sochi. Among the new additions, the Ski Halfpipe, Ski Slopestyle and Snowboard Slopestyle proved to be the most popular. The new events brought a bit of style to the somewhat stuffy Olympic image.

The US team ended second in the overall medal count, but came up with a shortage of gold medals this year. The US won a total of 28 medals: 9 gold, 7 silver and 12 bronze. The host country, Russia, was the overall medal, with 33. Although the US team felt disappointed in their speed skating and hockey performances, there were enough bright spots to make Americans proud of their athletes.
