Happy Mother’s Day!

History of Mother’s Day

Are you ready for Mother’s Day? Mother’s Day 2015 is just five days away, and is a special day to let your mother know just how much you care and appreciate her. Anna Jarvis created Mother’s Day in 1908, but it did not become an official holiday in the United States until 1914.

Jarvis conceived the idea of Mother’s Day following the death of her mother in 1905 as a way to honor all the sacrifices that mothers make for their children. After getting financial backing from John Wanamaker, a Philadelphia department store owner in 1908, she organized the first official Mother’s Day celebration at a Methodist church in Grafton, West Virginia. The same day, thousands of people attended a Mother’s Day event at one of the Wanamaker’s retail stores in Philadelphia.

Today, Mother’s Day is celebrated around the world in many different ways. In the United States, Mother’s Day is typically celebrated by presenting mothers with flowers and gifts. The celebration has become one of the biggest consumer spending holidays of the year.

Many political activists have used Mother’s Day as a launch pad for political or feminist causes throughout history. Martin Luther King Jr’s wife Coretta Scott King used Mother’s Day to host a march in support of underprivileged women and children. In the 1970s, many women groups also used the holiday to highlight the need for access to childcare and equal rights.
