Happy Arbor Day!

Arbor Day History

Happy Arbor Day from Agape Brokers Insurance! While Arbor Day is nationally recognized on the last Friday of April, which would be April 24th this year, California gets a head start on the holiday and starts the celebration on April 7th! Keep these Arbor Day fun facts in mind to impress all your friends and family this holiday.

The first Arbor Day took place on April 10th in 1872 in Nebraska. As the brainchild of Julius Sterling Morton, who was a journalist and politician in Nebraska, worked to improve agricultural techniques throughout the United States as the Secretary of Agriculture to President Grover Cleveland.

Morton believed that the landscape and economy of Nebraska could benefit from planting trees. He started planning shade trees, orchards, and wind brakes on his personal farm, and urged people in his community to do the same. When Morton became a member of the state board of agriculture in Nebraska, he proposed a special day that would be dedicated to planting trees and increasing the awareness of the importance of trees. The first Arbor Day in Nebraska was a huge success and led to more than one million trees being planted. Arbor Day became a state holiday in Nebraska in 1885, being celebrated on April 22nd, Morton’s birthday.

There are many ways that you can celebrate Arbor Day, including:

  • Go on a hike with your family, and identify the different trees that you see.
  • Plant a tree, either in your own yard, or check with your local community to see if you can plant a tree on public property.
  • Volunteer with a tree planting organization in your local community. Not only will you meet new people, but you will also help to make a difference.
