SR-22 Basics

Chances are, you have heard of an SR-22 if you know anyone who has been convicted of a DUI. Most people think that SR-22 is a type of insurance. However, an SR-22 is simply a document that is required if you have a rough driving history, such as a past DUI or a suspended license.

An SR-22 is verification that you have an auto insurance policy and is written by an auto insurance company. State law or a court will require a driver to get an SR-22 depending on their driving record before they are allowed to drive. In most cases, drivers are required to file an SR-22 form to make sure that they have the proper amount of auto insurance coverage after some type of serious traffic incident, including drunk driving. It is important to keep in mind that even if you have the option to get an SR-22 after a DUI, it does not mean that it will be approved.

An SR-22 includes different information that you are required to disclose when applying, including your:

• Social security number
• Driver’s license number
• Date of birth
• Car’s Vehicle Identification Number, or VIN
• Start and end dates of your auto insurance policy

Not all auto insurance companies offer SR-22 forms when applying for an auto insurance policy. When you are applying for an SR-22, make sure to do your research to ensure that you meet all of the car insurance laws in the state, including having the minimum amount of coverage. Typically, SR-22 forms must be carried for at least three years.
